Nilgiri Chokeberry is a small tree up to 15 m tall.
Branchlets are round, warty, hairless. Leaves are simple, alternate,
spirally arranged. Stipule lateral, falling off and leaving scar;
leaf-stalk about 3.5 cm long, slightly channeled above, hairless; blade
8-11 x 3.8-4.8 cm, elliptic to elliptic-ovate, tip pointed with with a
short sharp point, base pointed to rounded, margin sawtoothed to
emtire, leathery, hairless; midrib slightly channeled above; secondary
nerves 8-14 pairs, slender; tertiary nerves broadly netveined. Flowers
are borne at branch-ends, in corymbs. Flowers are 4 mm across, white;
sepals ovate, pointed; petals obovate, 1.5 x 1 cm; stamens inserted at
the rim of the sepal-cup cup; ovary 3-celled, hairless, stalkless.
Flower-stalks are about 0.5 cm. Drupe is nearly spherical; seeds 2-4.
Nilgiri Chokeberry is endemic to southern Western Ghats - Anamalai and
Nilgiris.
